The Eagles had another busy day cutting salary and signing a player. After releasing Shawn Andrews on Wednesday to get his Michael Phelps on permanently, the team released both Kevin Curtis and Darren Howard yesterday. Both players were roster bonus casualties along with the constant injuries and failed expectations. I would like to point out that my fellow contributor, Zach, straight called these two releases yesterday!
The Eagles also officially signed Darryl Tapp to a 3-year contract. Tapp envisions himself playing opposite Trent Cole but others suspect he will be more of a 3rd down specialist. Tapp has not even talked to defensive coordinator Sean McDermott yet so nothing will be set until that happens.
Stay tuned to the Eagles. They are on a role releasing players...
The Flyers got a much needed win last night defeating the Stars 3-2. Brian Boucher earned a tough victory in Dallas which hopefully will bring him some confidence since he is the goalie for the rest of the year. Boucher is the starting goalie because earlier yesterday Michael Leighton was diagnosed with a severe ankle sprain putting him on the shelf 8-10 weeks.
Hopefully Boucher can find some of that 1999 magic he had or the Flyers will be playing golf very early this year. The Flyers are currently the 5th seed in the East but are only 4 points away from the 8th seed.
The Phillies had a rare off day yesterday but Brad Lidge did pitch in a minor league game. Lidge pitched the 1st inning against the Blue Jays allowing 1 run and 3 hits on 16 pitches. Lidge insisted he was mostly concerned with building his arm strength and throwing a few sliders. The most important thing is he felt healthy afterward in the knee and elbow areas. That's great news.
Lidge also began to accept that he will not be ready for opening day. His goal remains so, but he's looking at the Astros series as a more realistic expectation. If Lidge is not ready, Ryan Madson will close in his place.
The Phillies play the Orioles at 7:05pm tonight. The game is not televised.
The Sixers are coming off a victory against the woeful Nets and will play another terrible team tonight. The Sixers and Knicks tip-off at 7:30pm in New York on CSN. Rumors are picking up about a possible Billy King return. Keep an eye out for any developments because it could happen at any time.
