As the NBA approaches one of the most anticipated free agency periods in years (which officially begins Thursday, July 1), LPS's own Dan O'Brien has broken down what you need to know about the cast of characters who make up the NBA free agent class of 2010.
Read on for DOB's thoughts on who goes where and why. You might be surprised to learn that this group may not revolve around King James, but rather another bright star in the NBA sky.
Lebron, D-Wade and Bosh. . .
Oh my.

NBA Free Agency has been dominating recent sports headlines including those pertaining to The World Cup, Strasberg being the real deal, the Stanley Cup winners trading one of the essential pieces that won them the Cup, etc. Being a basketball fan,I love it. Being a sports fan in general, I love that ESPN's annual summer focus on Brett Farve, the Yankees and the Red Sox has been delayed by this distraction.
Thursday night's and Friday's signings will start the game of free agency chess with the players controlling all of the pieces for once. Like the game of chess, the most important piece on the board, King James, may not have the most important valuation of all of the free agents. That critical piece is "Queen Bosh". His decision is the one that will affect everyone other pieces moves, from pawn Randy Foye to knight Rudy Gay.I see three scenarios for Bosh. One, he signs with Chicago. If he becomes a Bull then I expect LeBron to become one as well. If this happens, the Bulls have to be the favorites going into the season. Two, he agrees to go to the Lakers in a sign-and-trade involving Bynum and potentially Odom. Again, if this happens then the Lakers have to be the favorites. Three, he signs with Miami knowing that Dwade is coming back.Wildcard here is the Heat's ability to sign 3 max free agents. I'm not one of the believers that LeBron, Dwade, and Bosh will all sign with the Heat, but if it happens then I expect Miami to become essentially an All-Star team. A lineup of Wade, LeBron, Beasley, Bosh, and me at center could win the East next year and challenge the Lakers for the crown. Imagine if you're a vet like Mike Miller or Ray Allen or dare I say it.... Shaq, wouldn't you be intrigued at signing with the Heat for the veteran's minimum and having the chance to not only win a 'chip but be part of one of the potential great teams of all time? The next week or so should be a wild ride. Here's my predictions for Free Agency:LeBron: Bulls – teaming with Rose, Deng, Noah, and Bosh will prove too tempting for LeBron. While there will be pressure in Chicago for him to win, it won't be as bad as the pressure in NY, Miami (if all Big 3 FA's sign there), or even his hometown Cleveland. Plus the Cavs have a slop team and lack the ability to pair him with another top FA. If there is one thing an NBA fan knows, it's that even the best player in the league (MJ, Kobe, Duncan, KG, Shaq, Hakeem, etc) can't win a championship without another great player or two in the lineup. LeBron knows this as well. Wildcard: the Nets and Miami.Bosh: Bulls – gets to play his natural position, PF, next to Noah. Wildcard: the Lakers.Wade: Miami – will get max money, will get a sidekick or two, and FL has no state income tax. Wildcard : the Clippers. Dwade is dating Gabrielle Union and loves the Hollywood lifestyle. Shockingly, the Clips have a really quality young team. Could be the piece that pushes them over the edge or could get sucked up into the party scene and becomes a shell of himself.Boozer: Miami – has wanted to go there for a while, is good friends with Wade, and Pat Riley loves him. Wildcard: Dallas.Amare: The Knicks – reunited with D'Antoni and loves the spotlight. Wildcard: New Jersey – still gets the NY spotlight but also gets to hang with Jay-Z.Joe Johnson: The Knicks – reunited with BOTH D'Antoni and Amare. Wildcard: New Jersey and Atlanta (will he want to give up $30 million by leaving?).Dirk: stays in Dallas.Yao: stays in Houston (much to the Rockets dismay).Pierce: not going anyway, stays in Boston.Ray Allen: stays in Boston at a discount. Why give up on a good thing?Rudy Gay: stays in Memphis (get that money Rudy). Wildcard: Minnesota.David Lee: Dallas. Wildcard: The Knicks if they miss out on their target players.John Salmons: who cares?Luis Scola: see above.Randy Foye (Philadelphia connection with being a Villanova U alum): the Bobcats, the Lakers, or the Knicks. If the Sixers had drafted a big man I would have been picketed by myself outside of the Wach/Citi Center for them to sign him. He got shafted in D.C. And let himself get discouraged and out of shape. Could be an absolute steal for whoever signs him.JJ Redick: hated him in college (but not as much as Adam Morrison). Like him a lot now. Really improved his handle, ability to create his own shot, quickness, defense, and overall toughness. Plus I always have to root for the scrappy white guy as he gives all suburban white kids hope.To close, as a Sixer's fan, I hope that teams like the Mavs, Minnesota, Clippers, etc miss on their targeted Free Agents and give us a chance to trade Iggy/Lou Williams/etc for expiring contracts, young players, and draft picks. The team has admitted they're rebuilding so try to move the heavy contracts, they already have a cheaper young player who plays his position in Thad Young, and moving Sam shows they don't prima donnas on this team. So Ed Stefanski, I ask you to not be an idiot and over value Iguadala. Move him for whatever you can get. You messed up on not pulling the trigger with the proposed Houston deal (McGrady's expiring and Mike Miller, I mean Chase Budinger), so please don't let that happen again.
